The ALS Ice Bucket Challenge has become the new, popular “challenge” in the social media world. Many different people from middle school kids to celebrities and politicians have participated in the challenge. The challenge consists of being nominated by someone and nominating at least two others and pouring a bucket of ice and water poured on top of your head and, most importantly, you post a video on social media with the hashtag #IceBucketChallenge or #StrikeOutAls.
ALSA.org states “ALS is a progressive neurodegenerative disease that affects nerve cells in the brain and the spinal cord. Motor neurons reach from the brain to the spinal cord and from the spinal cord to the muscles throughout the body. The progressive degeneration of the motor neurons in ALS eventually leads to their death. When the motor neurons die, the ability of the brain to initiate and control muscle movement is lost. With voluntary muscle action progressively affected, patients in the later stages of the disease may become totally paralyzed”. ALS has no cure but yet but some medication that is able to slow down the affects. ALS stands for Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis and is also known as Lou Gehrig’s Disease. Lou Gehrig was a Major League Baseball player in the 20’s and 30’s, who developed the disease in 1938 and later died in 1941. Mao Zedong, a Chinese leader for the Communist party, developed the disease and died in 1976. Professor Stephen Hawking developed the disease 30 years ago and still lives at age 70.
Celebrities and have participated in the challenge such as Selena Gomez, Steve Aoki, Oprah, Lady Gaga, James Franco, Charlie Sheen, and many others. President Obama did not participate in the challenge but donated money to The ASL Association. Our very own Headmaster Mr. Fletcher has participated in the challenge as well. ASLA has made over $30 million through this challenge and donations. I challenge you to donate money to ALSA and accept the challenge.
