There are many girls on the girls’ basketball team, but on the cold morning of February 7, Mr. Travis and I interviewed Emily Webb, A.D. Keuchle, and Kay Kay Smith in the library.
The Lady Guard basketball team is 5-3 in district, 10-10 on the season. Their three losses have been to McKinney Christian twice and then Lutheran. McKinney Christian is the best team in the district and the Guard is not far behind them, but they are neck and neck with Dallas Lutheran. They have already earned a spot in the playoffs, now it is just a battle as to whom they’ll play in the playoffs.
When asked about the season, Kay Kay said they are “hoping to go far in district,” which seems like they have done so far! Great job!
The goal of the team is to end up 2nd in district so they don’t have to play McKinney Christian in the playoffs. Monday they play Yavnah and on Tuesday they play Lutheran. If they beat Lutheran, then they have the possibility to play Lutheran again on Thursday
A.D. explained, “We have to beat Lutheran two times in a row to get second in district.” They have to have a tied record with Lutheran and then they will play at a neutral site in Dallas to determine who will be second in district.
Kay Kay said, “Papa Ricky has compared our stats to the stats from last year and the ones from two years ago and our stats are really good this year. If we get second in district, it would be our first year to ever get second.”
We asked Papa Ricky for some of his thoughts about the season. He said, “Our mainstay this year has been our defense and hustle. Our girls simply never quit. We are a true TEAM! Every week different players step up to make huge contributions in a game.”
The players agree with their coach. Emily Webb added that “we have a young team and we have bonded well. We also work well as a team. The season has been tough, but we just keep working.”
Indeed, they are young: Morgan Fore is the only senior on the squad.
I’ll end with a quote from Papa Ricky about the girls and the season: “In my book, the scoreboard only shows the points each team scored. It doesn’t show the effort, sportsmanship, character and heart that our girls exhibit. That’s why in my book – we never lose a game–we always walk away winners!”
Go Lady Guard! Come support them as they finish off district and begin their playoffs run!
